“Worker Profile; Robert Devlin”
This profile is about Robert Devlin. He is a chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) in American General. His company is a multilingual financial service company and dealing principally in life insurance, pensions, annuities, consumer loans, and investment. His job is going to visit shareholders, make presentation, and have a meeting with their shareholders. He needs to do what he thinks is best thing in the interest of the shareholders. He is fifty-eight years old. He began selling life insurance for the Mutual life insurance company of New York when he graduated from college. After thirteen years, he joined American General Corporation and has worked for them ever since. He often works eighteen hours per day and he rarely get more than four or five hours of sleep per day, because he maybe spend twenty-five percent in his Houston office, and maybe another twenty- five percent in his New York office. And then the balance of his time is spend on the road, visiting shareholders, making presentation, going to some of their corporate meetings. Even though the works sometimes is hard and have the pressure, he still enjoys his job. One reason is that he enjoys challenge; it really keeps him going from job. Another reason is this job is being able to develop and work with a term of good executives and then recognizing that what he does for the organization enhances value to their shareholders.
I was surprise that Robert spends almost eighteen hours per day in his job and he still enjoys it. He focuses on his job and pushes himself to be the best. He does everything just wants to get more benefit to their shareholders and then they are able to admire him. Without a doubt, he is a successful person. He gets a lot of money from his job. However, I would not like this job. He is like a “starving artist”, for his job, he does not care how long he spends in the job he does. There is no fun in the life. I feel he is so lonely. Every day he just works and works to be the best. But life is not only work; we need to build good relationship with our friends and family. I like freedom like Chris who is a temp. He does not care how people think about him. He enjoys life very much. Overall, I admire Robert because he is a good CEO. However, I do not want to him. I like to pursuit of freedom, happily and enjoy life.
